Gordon Ray Johnston, formerly of Brookmeade, passed away on his 96th birthday at the Methodist Country House in Greenville, Delaware.

He was born in Philadelphia and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Irvin Ray Johnston and Florence Erica Rhodes Eichner, and two sisters, Mary Henry and Barbara Boehm. Gordon is survived by Helen Weigand Johnston, his loving wife of 73 years.

Gordon was known for his good humor, cartoon drawing, elegant ballroom dancing, competitive chess playing, love of travel and memorable Super Bowl parties. A generous person, he was always thinking of the needs of others and supported many local charity organizations. He was a wonderful role model to his many loving grandchildren and made a positive influence on their lives.

During WWII, Gordon served his country by using his electrical engineering skills he obtained from Drexel University to improve power systems for torpedoes and submarines. He also worked on power systems for the National Space Association and many other leading manufacturing companies in the Del-Marva Peninsula. He retired from the Exide Corporation in 1978 after 45 years of service.

Besides his loving wife Helen, he is survived by his children Gordon Ray Johnston, Jr. of Philadelphia, Dr. Eileen Johnston and her husband Dr. David Obzanski of Midway, Utah and Karl L. Johnston and his wife, Patricia of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.
Gordon was the grandfather of 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grand children and 1 great-great grand daughter.

Gordon suffered a stroke two weeks before his death and passed away peacefully just shortly after his birthday celebration.

Services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the Methodist Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807.
